Glasgow drag queen Rujazzle on city's 'incredible' scene ahead of Big Feed gig

One of Glasgow's top drag queens has hailed the city for its 'incredible' drag scene with a big event set to take place at Big Feed this weekend.

Night With The Queens takes place on Saturday, July 2, starring Rujazzle's fellow performers CJ Banks and Skinny Minnie. Ahead of the all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza, Rujazzle, who goes by Ru, chatted to Glasgow Live about making it as a drag queen here and why our audiences are like no other.

She said: "The Glasgow drag scene and its audiences are absolutely incredible. Nowadays audiences here are becoming more and more diverse.

"I'll perform to young people, children, old folks - it's great. Expanding the audience lets more people realise that drag is a skill and an art form - it's great.

"Show's like Ru Paul's Drag Race have put drag on the world stage and it was amazing to see people like Lawrence Chaney starring. Hopefully playing Big Feed will do that too."

Ru got into drag several years ago and her success hasn't appeared overnight.

"I used to be gigging every day of the week," she added.

"I'd do loads of competitions and open stages, you really have to work your a** off to get into this. But it's all worth it in the end."

And there's more to drag than wigs and makeup, according to the Glasgow queen.

"Drag is light in what can be a really dark world for people," Ru said.

"Recently I performed in Glasgow and there was a refugee in the audience. They left me a note thanking me for helping them see its okay to be themselves - being gay in their country is illegal.

"Those moments stay with you, I've held onto that note ever since."
