Glasgow daycare worker asked colleagues to lie about child's bruise

A daycare worker from Glasgow has received a warning after she didn't tell parents about their child's bruise and asked her colleagues to lie.

Rochelle Lundie was reprimanded by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) after she allowed a child to leave her care with a bruise on their cheek without telling the parents or reporting it to her line manager.

She later failed to provide a written statement regarding the bruise and asked her colleagues to “just write it down, but say you told me just as the child left”.

After hearing the evidence surrounding the matter, which took place on or around June 14, the SSSC hit the daycare worker, who has been registered since 2015, with a warning on her registration for an 18-month period.

The report stated: "You failed to speak with AA’s parent about the bruise on AA’s cheek and allowed AA to leave the setting. You also failed to provide a written statement of the incident and failed to report the concern to your line manager on the day the bruise on AA’s cheek was reported to you.

"This had the potential to place AA at risk of harm. You are an experienced senior registered social service worker, who has been registered with the SSSC since 2015 and you should have been well aware of the standards of conduct expected of you.

"Social service workers are expected to be truthful, open, honest, and trustworthy.

"You asked your colleagues, YY and ZZ to lie about the incident in an attempt to conceal your behaviour. The SSSC consider that you reacted with poor judgement to the situation rather than your behaviour indicating that you do not hold the correct fundamental values to work with vulnerable people. "

Despite the SSSC's concern regarding Rochelle Lundie's dishonesty, they did acknowledge that up until this point her record was 'unblemished' and that the incident was an 'isolated' one.

The notice came into effect on December 8.
