Glasgow Daldowie and Linn crematoriums to benefit from major refurbishment work

The renovation of two major Glasgow City Council owned crematoriums are to be completed this year, it has been confirmed.

Refurbishment work on Daldowie Crematorium’s building and surrounding roads was carried out in 2021 with further work to add CCTV due to be completed by the end of last month.

Work is also expected to be carried out on Linn Crematorium later this year.

The local authority undertakes an average 5500 cremations per year at its locations at Linn and Daldowie.

An update was brought before the environment and liveable neighbourhoods committee on Tuesday afternoon. Questions were raised about the extent of the work due to be carried out on Linn Crematorium.

Councillor Stephen Docherty said: “In relation to Linn, is there going to be any investment in the building in the near future because unfortunately I was there for a few funerals recently and the place is in a pretty dilapidated state.”

A council officer confirmed that a programme was in place, which would include renovating the building.

The official said: “This is due to commence later this year. It will predominantly be dealing with mechanical and electrical but there will be a significant amount of money spent on the aesthetics as well.”

Councillor Jon Molyneux added: “My comments are similar to councillor Docherty’s. I have also recently had to organise a funeral. I have been looking at woodland burials and the nearest woodland burial to Glasgow is in East Ayrshire - a private site.

“I guess I was interested in whether the department is looking at the opportunity as there is a growing demand for green and woodland burials. Are we looking at opportunities to do that, I would assume on land in the Linn Park area and Daldowie.

“If this isn’t being looked at I would be happy to engage around this piece of work.”

The officer advised that they were looking at all options for cremations and burials.

The officer said: “A woodland burial is something we have considered but have not yet progressed with but we will be looking to do so in the future.”
