Glasgow 'could host next Commonwealth Games' with announcement 'due shortly'

GLASGOW could be set to host the next Commonwealth Games, according to reports.

Sports journalist Duncan Mackay took to Twitter/X to say he had been informed by various sources while working at the Paris Olympics that an agreement was reached for the 2026 games.

If successful, Glasgow would host the games 12 years after first hosting the event in 2014.

Mackay said: “Some good news for the Commonwealth Games, I am hearing. Multiple people have told me during the Olympics at Paris that the Commonwealth Games Federation have reached an agreement with Scotland for Glasgow to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“They will replace Victoria, who withdrew last year. An announcement is due shortly after the end of these Olympics – maybe even this week.”

Australia cancelled its plan to host the games after it was revealed that doing so would cost around 589 million Australian dollars.

In April, chair of Commonwealth Games Scotland Ian Reid said: “Glasgow has a fantastic track record of delivering large sporting events within sensible budgets, with world class facilities and expertise already in place as a legacy of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games a decade ago.”

He added: “We believe our concept provides the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) with a viable, cost effective and exciting solution which importantly won’t involve significant sums of public funding.

“We look forward to discussing the concept further with the CGF, our member sports, athletes and wider partners.”

Commonwealth Games Scotland also previously provided an economic solution suggesting that, if the games were held in Glasgow, the CGF would provide a £100m in funding with the rest of the money coming from tickets, sponsors and broadcasting.

We also previously told how Humza Yousaf said he had asked staff to “explore” the possibility of hosting the games while he was first minister.
