Glasgow City in 'rollercoaster' SWPL title victory as Leanne Ross hails Rangers drama that left Celtic reeling

Glasgow City have been crowned SWPL champions after a late winner from Lauren Davidson saw off Rangers and ended Celtic's dream.

It was a historic day for women's football in Scotland as Glasgow's big three went into the final day knowing they could all win the title. Any victory would have done it for Glasgow City at Ibrox while Rangers knew it would be theirs if they won and Celtic didn't win by more...a complicated list of permutations ahead of a huge day.

It looked set to be heading for a goalless draw in a tense game at Ibrox though and that meant any victory would have been enough to seal the title for Fran Alonso's team in front of more than 15,000 spectators. The full-time whistle had blown at Celtic Park and goals from Caitlin Hayes and Natasha Flint looked set to be the difference in the title picture. goal difference.

However, City hero Davidson netted the vital goal in added time to secure the trophy - with the Ibrox side relinquishing the title and the second Champions League spot, which went to runners-up City. It meant heartbreak for Malky Thomson's team as CIty celebrated reclaiming the silverware.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, City boss Leanne Ross said: "It was an absolute rollercoaster, but all credit to the players they massively stuck to the game plan. I'm so so proud of them today. I said it after the defeats we've had recently that you learn a lot about yourself and teammates in situations where they aren't going so well.

"The girls have stuck together and they still believed. They came out here today and gave absolutely everything."
