Glasgow City Council issues update on funerals for Monday as some parts of UK cancel services

Glasgow City Council has issued an update to funeral services in the city, as several businesses close across the UK on the day of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

On Monday, September 19, many businesses, including shops, restaurants and funeral directors will close in respect of the bank holiday, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. One post on social media went viral overnight, as questions circulated on whether funerals will also be rearranged.

The tweet reads: "So all funerals due on the 19th have been cancelled! My heartfelt sympathy with all those bereft families involved." Over 21,800 people liked this tweet, with thousands of replies stating their upset and outrage at this.

The National Association of Funeral Directors replied to this tweet, stating: "Some funerals will go ahead, others are moving to a different date - led by the needs and wishes of the bereaved families involved."

However, one Twitter user responded to this, saying: "I’m afraid that isn’t the case as the crematorium I had arranged for a family funeral has decided to close on the 19th."

Another said: "Unbelievable, just heard a woman on LBC saying her mother's funeral due to be held on the 19th has been cancelled. She has family coming from all over the world and is in discussion about a new date. I cannot believe the late Queen would be happy about this."

And a third replied: "It’s because it has been declared a bank holiday, which staff are entitled to take. I don’t think that the ramifications of declaring a sudden bank holiday were thought through."

Glasgow City Council have stated that any funerals already confirmed with the council’s bereavement services for Monday, September 19 will go ahead as scheduled.
