Glasgow church which houses bones of St Valentine popular for romantic proposals

When it comes to which countries are the hub for love and romance people often jump to places like Rome or Paris and never look closer to home - in Glasgow - where Saint Valentine's remains are also kept.

As we shower our loved-ones with gifts and plenty of cuddles tomorrow, it's important to remember one of the world's most famous saints who inspired Valentine's Day.

You could say it's like Christmas, but for loved-up couples, but did you ever think St Valentine has links to Glasgow?

Though his flower-crowned skull is famously displayed in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome, some of his relics are also said to be housed in a small box in a church found in the southside of Glasgow.

They are in a small wooden casket in a Gorbals church on Ballater Street, in Glasgow.

The bones of the saint's forearm were “rediscovered” in 1999, having been kept in a cardboard box, on top of a wardrobe, for six years.

Today he's earned a far more amorous spot and if you are after some quirky V-Day plans, why not go for a romantic stroll and look upon the ‘Corpus Valentini Martyris’.

You might be wondering, why Glasgow? And specifically, why the Gorbals?

Certainly Glasgow isn't the first place you think of when you hear the phrase 'city of love' - but we've certainly earned the accolade thanks to a wee box hidden in the heart of the southside.

St Valentine's remains were brought to Glasgow by Franciscan monks who were impressed by the faith of locals. His bones were originally taken to St Francis' Church in 1868 where they were contained before being moved to the former St Luke's Church on Ballater Street in 1993.

It's also become common for men to propose to their girlfriend's on Valentine's Day in the church beside the container and the statue of St Valentine.

According to Reverend Antony Collins, Blessed St John Duns Scotus Church carries the forearm of St Valentine, with the rest of him scattered across cities such as Rome, Dublin and Birmingham.

So, when you're thinking of some date ideas that'll impress your other half, why not take a trip to see the good old romantic saint himself? While we can't guarantee it to set the mood, it will definitely score you points if you're keen to impress your date...
