Glasgow church foodbank raided by heartless thief who smashed through door

A foodbank based in a church in Glasgow is in shock after a callous thief smashed their way inside to raid its supplies.

Volunteers arrived at the Free Church of Scotland on Holmfauldhead Place in Govan on Thursday morning to find the entrance had been forced open and food had been stolen. Glasgow Live reports that the thief was not able to make off with much.

However, those working to help those in need in the area say they have been left "saddened" by the raid. They are also counting the cost of having the door repaired – but have been able to carry on giving food to the hungry.

The doors were splintered and forced open (supplied)

A volunteer said: "We were adamant that the foodbank should go ahead as it's not the people who need the food's fault. We did manage to get a new supply of food and also operate on the biggest scale so far – over 50 people were helped out.

"We were more than happy that they couldn't lift a lot away. However, the damages to the church doors are going to cost the congregation a lot to have repaired.

"Food was scattered around the place and lying at the front door as if to be taken. We as a church are praying for the sinner as any good Christian would."

Food was strewn across the venue when helpers arrived on Thursday morning. Police have launched an investigation.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10.40am on Thursday, 6 July, 2023, we were called to a report of a break-in at a premises on Holmfauldhead Place, Govan, Glasgow. Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police via 101 quoting reference 0997 of July 6, 2023."
