Glasgow children targeted by racist trolls after Nicola Sturgeon visit

Internet trolls targeted children in a Glasgow primary school with a torrent of racist abuse after they were visited by Nicola Sturgeon.

The First Minister has condemned online bullies who posted a barrage of insults after details of her successful visit to St Albert's Primary in Pollokshields was posted on social media.

She joined youngsters as they marked Climate Action Week on Friday, taking part in their assembly on global warming and chatting with them, the Daily Record reports.

But when pictures of the special day were posted online, internet trolls bombarded the post with racist insults, many of them aimed at the children themselves.

Ms Sturgeon quickly condemned the comments, tweeting: "Every brilliant young person and every member of staff is worth a million and more of the vile racists who hurl abuse at them.

"It's my privilege to represent the wonderful, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural Southside of Glasgow. I stand with them, always."

The school issued a statement, describing the online attack as "horrific", saying: "After an exciting day celebrating our success with our First Minister, we have been subject to the most horrific racist abuse.

"We are proud to serve our community, proud of our children who demonstrate the best of Scotland. Our motto is Creating Conscience Led Communities. We will continue to embed this is in all our practice.

"We urge all our colleagues to embrace equity in all policy and practice and stand as active allies with anti racist and culturally responsive practice.

"We are sending love and hope it touches the hearts of those who live in hate. Thank you for your support."

Staff also shared a moving quote by Martin Luther King Jr., presumably also in retaliation to the shocking incident.

And a Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: "This type of online abuse will not be tolerated."
