Glasgow cafe's Dungeons & Dragons nights surge in popularity after film release

The release of a new Hollywood blockbuster has resulted in a new wave of customers for a city centre business.

Geek Retreat on Union Street celebrates everything geek culture-related at their gaming cafe, community hub, and events venue and has seen an increase in popularity following the release of the Dungeons & Dragons movie.

The Hollywood depiction of the tabletop game was released in cinemas last month and has created a new fandom now intrigued by the film.

The Glasgow store has been overwhelmed with requests to play the game at their weekly events in-store.

Store manager, Quinn Westwood said: "We have been inundated with people asking about our Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evening sessions at Geek Retreat.

"The game has always been popular, but since the film was released - we've had people making enquiries about the game wanting to experience it for themselves.

"Demand to play Dungeons Dragons is extremely high, but Geek Retreat is welcoming anyone into the store wanting to find out more about the popular tabletop game.

Customer and avid fan, Lewis Meehan, also commented: "I have wanted to play for a while, but never had the courage to ask about it.

"However, once I had finally asked, Quinn and the staff were so welcoming and made me feel extremely comfortable.

"They spent some time introducing me to the game and I'm now addicted to it. I went to watch the movie at the cinema with some friends from here - I actually think because the mystique added that intrigue."

Despite the increased interest in Dungeons & Dragons, Geek Retreat Glasgow is encouraging anyone to come into their store at Union Glasgow if they want to find out more.

Quinn added: "Whilst we're seeing significant interest and booking in advance is always a must - we are a friendly bunch and we'll happily grab a milkshake, sit down and introduce someone to D&D."

It's not just Dungeons and Dragons that is capturing the imagination of customers, other popular tabletop games are also thriving at the venue, such as Pokémon and Warhammer 40K.

Geek Retreat Glasgow recently moved premises and will be celebrating their 10th anniversary this year with lots of big surprises planned over the coming months.
