Glasgow cafe and art gallery Outlier gets permission to sell alcohol

A popular cafe and art gallery on London Road can now serve alcohol after securing a licence.

Outlier, described as a “lovely community asset”, was handed a provisional premises licence at a meeting on Friday.

The city’s Licensing Board heard how owner Steven Turner has invested a six-figure sum to transform the building, creating 18 jobs in the process.

Outlier’s cafe helps to subsidise the gallery and event space, the board was told.

Stephen McGowan, representing the firm, said: “A lot of the exhibitions in the gallery won’t involve alcohol.

“We want the flexibility for this space to perhaps allow a champagne reception or something along those lines, perhaps a launch night for a particular artist or show.

“But also to have the flexibility to use the space for wider community events.”

Mr McGowan said Mr Turner had created a “lovely community asset” in an area that “perhaps needed a bit of TLC”.

“It’s a premises that has two key functions,” he added. “There is an art exhibition gallery space at the back and then there is a cafe bistro at the front.

“This has been a four-year long project for Steven to bring this premises to life. It probably would have been sooner but for covid, but it has been a long time coming.

“I think it’s fair to say he’s poured his heart and soul into this project. Coming here today is the next step in that journey.”

Since the recent opening of the gallery, there has been an exhibition from Glasgow School of Art graduates and a fashion pop-up event.

Mr McGowan said the alcohol provision in the cafe would be “very modest” and “ancillary to what the premises is as a bistro cafe”.

He said the venue has a “unique” nature, adding: “This isn’t a pub or a restaurant.”
