A bouncer who disarmed a gunman outside a popular bar has been left with a £5,000 bill in legal fees after being forced to defend himself on an assault charge.
Benjamin Bibby was accused of assaulting disgruntled customer Francis Smith outside Nico's on Sauchiehall Street back in December 2019, after he pointed a self-loading pistol at him.
Smith had earlier been involved in an incident there and had shouted "I am going to get a gun and shoot you" then returned with the firearm.
The 33-year-old and another bouncer managed to wrestle the gunman to the ground and disarm him before police were called.
Smith pled guilty to pulling out a self-loading pistol and threatening to shoot the men, along with two other firearms charges, and was sentenced to five years in prison.
Ben's case was eventually deserted by the Crown in January this year, but he still faces having to pay £4,900 in legal bills for his court defence.
A friend has now set up a fundraising page to raise money to go towards helping recoup some of the costs.
The page explains: "In December 2019, at Nico's Bar on Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, a disgruntled member of the public pointed a loaded gun at Ben, working as security. Ben approached him, took the gun off him, and then along with the two colleagues restrained him until the police arrived. The gunman is currently serving a 5 year prison sentence as a result.
"Since the incident, Ben was charged with assaulting the guy who pointed the gun in his face, and now, two years later, and following multiple court visits, all the charges have been dropped.
"However, Ben has had to fork out £4,900 in legal fees to defend himself. I have set up this page so we can donate towards recouping some of these costs. Please spread the word and share the link, and any donations are much appreciated."
