An employee for the Beatson Cancer Charity has been shortlisted for a Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations award.

Paul Sheerin, a volunteer coordinator, is a finalist in in the Employee of the Year category after raising more than £100,000 for the charity in the last 10 years.

The man from Cumbernauld has now raised £117,000 for other families impacted by cancer.

Paul organises an annual footgolf event to raise cash and has recently completed his 10th and final kiltwalk. To celebrate 10 years of being cancer free he's hosting a ball in June in aid of the charity, he’s also asking all 400 guests to bring a packet of chocolate biscuits for the tea trolley for patients in the chemotherapy unit.

Paul was nominated after the kind gestures he shows patients and staff in and around the hospital.

Paul has raised over £100k for the Beatson (Beatson Cancer Charity)

He told Glasgow Live: "We have the staff get togethers once every three or four months.

"I was at one recently and the CEO of the charity dropped the bombshell that I'd been nominated and shortlisted.

"Everybody knew about it apart from me. I'm absolutely shocked that I've been nominated and it just shows what my colleagues think of me.

"The charity means so much to me because of the support it gave us and with me now working there to help others."

Martin Cawley, CEO of Beatson Cancer Charity, said: “We are delighted to see Paul being recognised for the incredible commitment and dedication he shows to Beatson Cancer Charity and more specifically our volunteer services.

“Following his own experience, he is driven by an unrivalled and deep desire to help make the journey for people who have cancer just that little bit easier.

“He is much loved by the volunteers he supports, his colleagues in the organisation and staff in the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and staff from all over the hospital. He is a well-known and much-loved face around the hospital.”
