Glasgow artist studios opening their doors to the public in October

Two of Glasgow’s creative centres will be opening their doors to the public this month, allowing visitors access to studios.

Hanson Street Studios will be throwing open their doors this weekend (October 22 and 23) while The Briggait will be doing the same the following weekend (October 29 and 30) - with events free to attend including opportunities to purchase artwork, print, ceramics, textiles and crafts direct from creators.

Hanson Street Studios, formerly Will’s Tobacco Factory, is home to 200 artists and houses a ceramics and glass-making studio. As well as printmakers, painters, sculptors and other creatives - the Glasgow Glass Studio will be staging demonstrations for visitors.

The Briggait’s open days are set for the following weekend, located on the north bank of the Clyde. Once operating as the city’s fish market, it now houses Turner Prize winning artists.

Over the weekend, visitors can mingle with jewellery makers, illustrators, printmakers and more. An exhibition of various works will be installed in The Briggait’s galleries and main hall.

Studio space provider Wasps, who run both studios, are the largest creative community in the UK with over 1000 artists calling a Wasps building home.

Daniel Pollitt, Wasps spokesperson, said: “The Open Studio events are a terrific opportunity for those interested in the arts to explore behind the scenes at two of Scotland’s major centres for creativity, and understand some of the incredible work that goes on behind normally closed doors.

“The artists and makers are happy to discuss their practices and you may even come away with that unique and special gift, for someone else or yourself.”

Hanson Street Studios will be open from 11am to 4pm on October 22 and 23, while The Briggait will be open from 11am until 5pm on October 29 and 30.
