Glasgow Airport flights diverted after air traffic staffing issue sparks chaos

Holidaymakers flying out of Glasgow Airport have been warned of possible delays following air traffic issues.

Flights have been delayed and cancelled after one of the runways was temporarily closed at around 10am this morning. Some aircraft have been diverted 37 miles away to Prestwick Airport in Ayrshire. It is believed that the closure is due to Air traffic control staff taking sick.

The 10.45am British Airways flight to London Heathrow and the 1.45pm EasyJet service to Amsterdam have so far been cancelled. Reports have suggested that some flights have been delayed for up to 90 minutes.

One passenger wrote on Twitter: "Currently sat on a hot plane. ATC at Glasgow are short staffed and those working needed a break. Not enough fuel to hold for 45 mins. Edinburgh runway was closed due to drone issues. Hoping to refuel and get to Glasgow airport ‘soon’"

While SNP MSP Angus MacNeil tweeted: :Flights delayed at Glasgow Airport - shortage of air traffic controllers and those ATCs that are there are needing to take a break says the pilot. ATC back on at 10:30am."

A spokesperson for Glasgow Airport said: "Operations were suspended between 10 and 10:30am due to a localised air traffic control issue. This resulted in a small number of short delays and two inbound aircraft to divert to Prestwick. Both flights are now returning to Glasgow Airport.

“We would like to apologise to our passengers for any inconvenience caused and thank them for their patience.”
