Giuliani Defamation Trial: Not Testifying, Risks M in Damages

Giuliani won't testify in his defamation trial; earlier stated intention to do so.

Rudy Giuliani, in the face of a looming defamation damages trial, just signaled an abrupt shift in his defense strategy. Rather than stand in his own defense as initially stated, his team declared that he will remain silent. The yet-to-be-explained U-turn comes against a backdrop of a judge upholding that Giuliani defamed two Georgia election workers in the fallout of the 2020 presidential election.

Giuliani had been disseminating fabrications and conspiracy theories centered around these workers, leading to a possible penalty of up to $43 million in damages. While it is unclear why the former New York Mayor reversed course, it's noteworthy that just last week, he pledged his readiness to testify.

Giuliani's reputation for seldom passing up the chance to speak into a microphone makes this withdrawal particularly noteworthy. Confirmations from his lawyer and spokesperson enhance the gravity of his sudden silence. The attorneys noted that, indeed, their client would not be speaking in his defense.

The past few days has seen emotional testimonies presented before the jury from the two Georgia election workers at the heart of this defamation case. Recorded phone messages that portrayed threats heightened the tension in the room. These messages, filled with racist comments and direct threats, were a direct consequence of Giuliani's public lies about the pair post-election 2020.

Deeply disturbing was a recorded emergency call made by one of the victims, Ruby Freeman, in the aftermath of the election. She reported that unknown individuals were banging on her door. So dire was her situation that she relocated, leaving her feeling dislocated and uprooted.

Despite the testimony of the wronged election workers, Giuliani and his defense lawyer have shown little reaction. Now that Giuliani has scrapped his plan to testify, a significant opportunity for him to defend his actions goes up in smoke.

Now, all eyes will be trained on the jury and the decision they will make, one that is likely to mark a significant turning point for Giuliani. The fallout from this case serves as a reminder of the severe damage false conspiracy theories can inflict.
