'Girls5eva' Finds New Life On Netflix After Peacock Cancellation

Sara Bareilles

Back in May 2021, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles returned to the Hollywood Bowl to promote a new album. During the concert, she was joined by her 'Girls5eva' co-stars - Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell, and Busy Philipps - for a special performance of the song '4 Stars' from the comedy series. The event took place amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, with the Hollywood Bowl's 17,500 seats empty as the concert was livestreamed.

'Girls5eva' was one of the early original series on Peacock, receiving critical acclaim but struggling to find a broad viewership. The show, created by Meredith Scardino, follows four women who reunite to revive their girl group after a long hiatus. The series blends humor with a deeper narrative about pursuing dreams later in life.

Despite its cancellation by Peacock, the show found a new home on Netflix after producers, including Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, and David Miner, pitched the idea to the streaming giant. Netflix, known for reviving underappreciated shows, saw potential in 'Girls5eva' and agreed to produce a third season.

The transition to Netflix involved renegotiating international deals and adjusting the show's budget. Season 3 was shot in a rapid six-week period, with all episodes directed by Kimmy Gatewood. The cast, including Sara Bareilles, embraced the opportunity to continue the series on Netflix, even without contract revisions.

Despite facing challenges such as pandemic-related delays and production shutdowns, the cast and crew of 'Girls5eva' remained committed to delivering a quality product. The show's unique blend of humor, music, and relatable storytelling resonated with both the audience and the industry, leading to its successful revival on Netflix.

Season 3 of 'Girls5eva' is set to premiere on March 14, with all 22 episodes available at once for viewers to enjoy. The cast's dedication and the show's resilience in the face of adversity highlight the power of storytelling and the impact of a second chance in the entertainment industry.
