A new musical about heroic women by the songwriter behind Girls Aloud is coming to London.

Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World is co-written by Miranda Cooper, whose chart hits include Sound of the Underground and The Promise, and is inspired by a series of children’s picture books about feminist icons.

Artist Frida Kahlo, civil rights campaigner Rosa Parks and suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst all feature in the show which is produced by the team behind hit historical musical Six about the wives of Henry VIII.

It opens at Theatre Royal Stratford East on June 15 with an initial run to July 17.

Cooper, whose career in the music industry started as a backing dancer to acts including Gina G, has also written musicals based on cult film Son of Rambow (corr) and David Walliams book Billionaire Boy

The theatre’s Artistic Director Nadia Fall said the show was “a total antidote to drudgery and I defy anyone not to leave on a cloud”.

It is part of a newly announced season at the theatre which includes Burn It Down, a series of six new shows inspired by “urgent political issues” and a double bill of performances by the Black Ballet company.

Fall said the Burn It Down season was inspired by a political “restlessness” and a feeling that “tipping points are being reached”.

She said: “Listening to our audiences there has been a huge appetite for congregation and debate around the most urgent political and social issues affecting all our lives.

“Burn it Down is very much a response to that: short, sharp dramas from some of the most talented writers of the moment. I’m expecting lively conversations in the bar post show.”
