Girls Aloud have revealed that Hugh Grant's iconic dancing scene in Love Actually “saved them” from being dropped by their record label.
The girl group appeared on Wednesday's This Morning days after confirming their reunion tour next year – and discussed how their song Jump, which featured on the Love Actually soundtrack, was a “turning point” for their career.
In the 2003 film, Grant plays The Prime Minister who in one scene dances around Downing Street to the Pointer Sister’s version of Jump before realising a member of staff is watching him and quickly stops.
Girls Aloud re-recorded the track, which peaked at number two on the UK Chart, especially for the British rom-com. They also starred in the films end credits.
Speaking to Alison Hammond about being involved in the iconic Christmas movie, Nicola Roberts said: “It was a turning point. We were actually going to be dropped before Jump by the label.
“The songs had gone from 1 to 2 to 3, and it was a massive success and saved us.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the band – Roberts, Cheryl, Nadine Coyle, and Kimberley Walsh - spoke about their upcoming tour beginning next May as they mark 21 years since they and the late Sarah Harding won Popstars: The Rivals.
Sharing how they plan to “celebrate” Harding, who died in 2021 from breast cancer, Roberts continued: “We are going to work really hard in making those moments of Sarah so magical which make the fans feel so included and give everyone that moment where she can be massively celebrated.
While Walsh added: “What we want to do is captured that kind of nostalgia that we created with her as a five over the years.
“We have old songs. All the hits Alison we cannot leave anything out.”
