Girl taken to hospital after being thrown off scooter in hit and run

A family whose daughter ended up in hospital following an alleged hit and run has blasted the police after claiming they took days to respond. Ruby Nurse, 11, had been out playing on her electric scooter with friends in Llwynhendy in Llanelli when they say she was clipped by a car and thrown onto the pavement.

The youngster suffered a sprained wrist, bad bruising to her right leg and the skin came off her right knee following the incident outside a primary school on the junction of Dwyfor and Heol Elfed. Her dad Dave Nurse, 40, of Lon Ceiriog in Llwynhendy, said he couldn’t believe the amount of time it took him to get a police response given they live directly opposite the police station.

It has led him to report the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Dyfed Powys Police said efforts were made to get further details the day after the incident. You can follow more of our stories from Carmarthenshire by subscribing to our daily newsletter here.

Dave said: “Ruby was out on an electric scooter with friends. They were crossing the road where the council has just dropped the kerb. My daughter was the last one to cross the road, one of her friends crossed, then the other - a car struck the back of her scooter. She went flying off it and they damaged the £350 scooter.

“She landed on the pavement and she suffered a sprained wrist, her right leg was badly bruised and the skin came off her right knee. There were two women who witnessed it and they phoned my wife Kate. We phoned the police and phoned 999, the ambulance said there was too much waiting time if she was walking wounded and we came and took her to Morriston Hospital.

“We didn’t hear anything from the police and were told 'we will be in touch in due course' even though it was a hit-and-run on a child.” He added: “She was in hospital for six to seven hours. I have reported the incident to the IOPC as the police didn’t make contact until 48 hours later. The police have not attended at all, all they have done is phone me.”

Dave said the incident had knocked Ruby's confidence in the wake of what had happened. “She’s fine now but is too scared to use the electric scooter and is very wary of the road,” Dave added. “She has lost a lot of confidence, she used to go everywhere on her scooter with her friends.”

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: “Dyfed-Powys Police received a call just after 6pm on Thursday, 10th March 2022, reporting that a road traffic collision had occurred at 5.20pm involving a child on a scooter and a motor vehicle. An investigation into the incident was begun and efforts were made to obtain further details the following day, Friday, March, 11th. The complainant has advised that he has contacted the IOPC.”
