A teenager who died after getting difficulty in a river following a village duck race has been been named.
Police confirmed they had attended the scene in Tameside along with emergency services shortly before 8pm on Wednesday following reports of a person in difficulty in the water.
Officers and fire crews eventually left the scene at around 11pm after medics were unable to save the teen. The tragedy followed the annual Broadbottom duck race, a model duck event which had taken place the Greater Manchester village earlier the same day.
Tributes have poured in online for 15-year-old Abbie Walton since the shocking incident, with friends sharing their memories of the "beautiful" teenager.
Some referenced the fact that Abbie had still been mourning the loss of her pal Lucy Smith, who went to the same school and drowned several months ago while trying to save a friend.
Writing on Facebook, one friend said she missed Abbie "so much already it’s unbelievable", adding that she was now "at rest now with Lucy, keeping her company".
In a message posted on social media on Thursday afternoon, Abbie's school Copley Academy said: "Copley Academy have been made aware of the tragic news that one of our students lost their life last night. We offer our deepest sympathy to all of those involved in this tragedy.
"Our hearts and thoughts go out to the families, loved ones, friends and local communities affected at this extremely sad time. Copley would like to offer our support and also the support of a specialist team."
Greater Manchester Police also offered their deepest sympathy and said they would continue to support the girl's family.
Detective Superintendent Rebecca Boyce said: "Yesterday evening's events are nothing short of devastating and my deepest sympathies are with the loved ones of the girl who lost her life in such awful circumstances.
"Officers will continue to support the family during this incredibly difficult time."
