A seven-year-old girl was crushed to death by an unfixed marble statue while she was playing in a hotel courtyard.
Lavinia Trematerra from Naples, Italy, was on holiday with her parents in Munich, Germany, when the accident took place on Friday evening.
She was playing with an eight-year-old boy when the statue weighing 200kg (441lbs) toppled from the pedestal it had been perched on for around 20 years.
The object then hit her in full view of her father, lawyer Michele Trematerra.
Three people in the hotel ran to Lavinia's aid after hearing her screams and lifted the statue off her.
Paramedics arrived on the scene and tried to resuscitate the child while taking her to a local hospital.
But sadly, almost two hours later, Lavinia succumbed to her severe injuries.
Munich Police said the statue weighed around 200kg (441lbs) and was 1.4m (4.6ft) high.
The force released a statement saying: "On Friday, August 26, 2022, at around 7.30pm, a child from Italy who was on vacation with her parents was in a courtyard of a Munich hotel.
"For reasons that are still unclear, a stone statue weighing around 200kg fell over and seriously injured the child.
"A scream made several people aware of the situation and they were able to free the child. An emergency call was then made."
It added: "The child was taken to a Munich hospital by ambulance, where she later succumbed to her injuries."
The girl's mother Valentina Poggi, who is also a lawyer, wrote on social media: "You are and will always be our angel. Rest in peace, love of our lives."
Her father Michele said: "Our life has changed."
Police are investigating the incident and will probe claims that Lavinia may have climbed onto the statue.
