Girl, 7, and three women injured in shooting outside London funeral

Three woman and a seven-year-old girl have been injured in a suspected drive-by shooting outside a funeral in north London.

Police were called to Phoenix Road, a small side street just outside Euston Station, just before 1.30pm today.

The incident happened near a church where a funeral was taking place. Three women, aged 48, 54 and 41, were taken to hospital after being found injured at the scene.

The 48-year-old woman's injuries are described as 'potentially life changing', My London reports. A seven-year-old girl was also injured in the shooting.

An air ambulance arrived at the scene and a police helicopter also surveyed the area. The police believe the shots may have been fired from a moving vehicle which then fled the scene.

No arrests have been made.

A witness who claims they were inside St Aloysius Church when the incident took place told MyLondon: "It was chaos. It was horrible.

"No one knew if it was a bomb or gunman. We were looking for places to hide. We all just snuggled into corners where we could. We left after about 10 minutes, I did not dare [leave before]. It was not nice."

In a statement, The Met Police said: "At 13:29hrs on Saturday, 14 January, police were called to reports of a shooting in Phoenix Road, NW1.

"Officers responded with medics from the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance. Three women – aged 48, 54 and 41 – were taken to a central London hospital.

"Their injuries have been assessed as non-life threatening. The 48-year-old has potentially life changing injuries.

"At 14:05hrs, police were informed that a seven-year-old girl had been taken to a central London hospital with injuries that are believed to have been sustained in the same incident. We await an update on her condition.

"There is a significant police presence in the area. An urgent investigation is under way and details of the incident are still emerging. At this early stage there have been no arrests.

"The incident took place in the vicinity of a church where a funeral was taking place. Initial enquiries suggest the shots were fired from a moving vehicle which was then driven away from the scene.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information about what took place should call 101, giving the reference 3357/14JAN. Information can also be provided to Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."

The victims were reportedly attending the funeral of mother and daughter, Fresia Calderon, 50, and Sara Sanchez, 20, who died within a month of each other.

Fresia fainted whilst getting off a flight from Colombia to Heathrow Airport and died at the scene on November 5. Doctors later blamed a pulmonary embolism, a rare blood clot that usually starts in the legs then gets stuck in an artery in the lungs.

Sara died 25 days later, after first having been diagnosed with leukaemia aged 17. A family member said she 'gave up all hope' after her mum passed away.

Officers have asked anyone with information to call 101 with the reference 3357/14Jan.
