A little girl was left in intensive care after a pair of ravenous dogs jumped over a fence and mauled her.
Paramedics rushed the youngster to hospital in serious condition after the attack in Woodridge, a suburb of Australia's Queensland on Monday at around 4.30pm.
The dogs were identified as Bull Arabs - a breed developed in Australia for hunting pigs - which have a calm temperament but also known for their aggressiveness after a number of recorded attacks on humans and other dogs.
It has now been "humanely euthanised" after six-year-old Laquarna Chapman sustained chest and abdominal injuries, according to Logan City Council.
The council said in a statement: "Following a serious dog attack in Woodridge on Monday afternoon, council acted under its legislative powers to seize two bull Arab-type dogs which were not registered or known to council.
“Today, in the interests of public safety, the two dogs were swiftly and humanely euthanised.”
In an earlier statement, the council said it had "zero-tolerance" for "irresponsible ownership and high-risk animal behaviour".
Speaking with 7News, Laquarna's family said thankfully she's now doing "all right" after being admitted to Queensland Children's Hospital.
After coming to her rescue, her uncle was also mauled on his legs by the dogs, with pictures showing the extensive injuries.
He said that on arrival, he looked at his niece and "thought she was dead".
The uncle - who asked not to be identified - said one of the ferocious mutts dragged the little one while she was on the fence.
“She got pulled off the fence by one of the dogs,” he told 7News.
“I just heard my mother screaming in panic. Just ended up jumping the fence to help her.
“One of the dogs was going to attack her face. I threw a chair at the dog.
“I tried chucking her over the fence, then I ended up getting mauled by the dogs.”
Police are investigating the circumstances around the incident.
It came just days before another horror attack in Melbourne.
A dog owner has issued a grovelling apology after a woman was mauled on a street, with the hound ripping off her ear.
The pooch, another Bull Arab cross, ran outside and clamped down on the neck of the woman, who is in her 60s, as she put rubbish outside her home in Bulleen.
The owner said she was devastated at what her dog did.
“I’m just so sorry for the lady,” she said. "I know there’s nothing that I can say that’s going to make it better for her. It’s heartbreaking.”
While accepting the hound was powerful and large, she said he's usually "loveable and dopey".
“It’s completely out of the blue, and you’re just thinking, ‘What triggered it? What triggered it?’ and I don’t think there will be an answer.”
“I understand what his fate will be and I understand for safety, for everybody, what’s going to happen,” his owner said.
