A toddler has been killed after she was knocked down by a car in West Yorkshire, police have said.
The two-year-old girl was hit by the vehicle outside a house on a residential street in Dewsbury on Saturday morning.
Officers said the youngster, who has not been named, was rushed immediately to hospital in a critical condition but tragically didn't make it.
Her death, cops said, was being treated as a "sudden unexpected death in childhood".
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 10.13am today, police were contacted by the ambulance service who were attending an incident in Millwater Avenue, in Dewsbury, where a child had been involved in a collision with a car outside an address.
"The child, a two-year-old girl, was taken to hospital in a critical condition and was pronounced dead a short time later."
The street remained cordoned off throughout Saturday afternoon as detectives investigated the scene.
The spokesperson added: "The incident is being treated as a sudden unexpected death in childhood and we ask that people consider the family and respect their privacy at what is clearly a very difficult time for them."
Following the tragic news, tributes poured in as people in the community shared their shock.
"What can I say. Tragic. So sad to read this, poor family, poor child" said one person on Facebook.
Another commenter said: "My heart goes out to the child's family, and the driver who will also be traumatised by this incident."
This was closely followed by a series of 'RIP' comments and 'hugs and kisses' from local readers.
Eileen Walker, another reader on social media, said: "RIP little one."
There were reports of a large police and emergence response presence earlier on Saturday morning, with the scene later closed.
A large number of cars were seen on the small cul-de-sac on Saturday afternoon, thought to be family or community members.
