Girl, 16, killed by train while trying to cross tracks 'to take shortcut home'

A 16-year-old girl was killed by a train while taking a shortcut home across railway tracks.

An inquest into the death of popular Mary Beary heard CCTV footage showed the teen "crossing the tracks with her mobile phone in her hand".

David Udomhiaye of British Transport Police (BTP) said footage showed Mary entering Broxbourne station in Hertfordshire at 9.57pm before climbing onto a wall close to the tracks.

A minute later she was seen trying to cross and was hit by a train, Hertfordshire Mercury reports.

"There is nothing from what I have seen to suggest it was a deliberate act, she was simply trying to cross the tracks," said Mr Udomiaye.

"It wasn't out of character for her to take that walk to get home, it was a shortcut for her to get home.

"All the evidence suggests she was happy - she had a happy day with her family and boyfriend and it was the worry of being in trouble when she got home that she was now distracted.

"My opinion from the investigation was that it was a tragic accident."

Mr Udomiaye stressed to Hertfordshire Coroner's Court in Hatfield that there was nothing suspicious considered in Mary's death.

A written statement from the train driver that night heard how he was driving through Broxbourne station at 18mph and was running roughly on time. He noted how "the weather was clear and the lights on the train were working".

As he was moving out of the station he said he "saw something move which could have been anything" so he sounded the train's horn.

Around two or three seconds later and one kilometre out of Broxbourne, he saw someone in front of his route and heard a crash.

"I give my condolences to the train driver because this must have been a difficult time for him," said assistant coroner, Dr Francis Cranfield.

Dr Cranfield told the court how a post-mortem examination in Sheffield concluded Mary died of multiple injuries and there was nothing found during the toxicology report.

She said: "I considered whether this could have been suicide or an accident but there is nothing to suggest this was suicide.

"I find therefore the cause of death as 1a, accidental death.

"I give my sincerest condolences to the family and friends at what must have been an incredible difficult time and still is."

Mary's death on Tuesday, July 30 shocked the town of Broxbourne.

She had spent the day with her mother and then her boyfriend.

At around 10pm that night, she was dropped off at the station and attempted to take a shortcut across the tracks to get home. Emergency services rushed to the station that evening but Mary was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

She was incredibly well known and a gated area underneath a bridge at the station was transformed with hundreds of bouquets, balloons and photographs in tribute to her.

Friends and family members described her as a "stunning girl" who was "very well known around the community" and "very well liked".

On the day of Mary's death, she had been out with her mum, Pamela, and had her eyebrows, eyelashes and nails done.

A written statement from Pamela said she and Mary "had spent most of the day together" and her daughter was her "usual laughing and happy self".

After they got home, Mary went into her caravan, which was next to their home, to make videos that often involved her singing to music.

At around 4pm she came back inside to tell her family that she was going out to her friends house a short distance away.

This was the last time Pamela saw Mary.

At around 8.30pm, Pamela said she had "a bad feeling wash over me and didn't know what it was".

She then tried to ring her daughter 15 times and messaged her but got no answer.

A written statement from Mary's boyfriend, Jerry Saunders, said the pair had been together for around 18 months and at 4pm on the day of Mary's death he picked her up from a car park near the station.

During a drive to Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex they were chatting and laughing about "everyday stuff" before a meal at Nandos.

He said "nothing was out of the ordinary" and "Mary seemed fine".

After they had finished in Lakeside, they drove back to the car park where Mary was first picked up at around 9pm.

They sat in Jerry's van for around 40 minutes chatting some more and they even spoke about marriage and "what it would be like for them".

The court then heard how Mary, when she was just about to leave, saw the messages and missed calls from her mum and grew upset.

She said goodbye to Jerry and rang back her mum to ask if she "was in trouble" and if her "phone would be taken off" her.

Pamela said in her statement that while Mary was not crying or shouting, she "could tell she was upset" and "could hear trains in the background".

After Mary's death, numerous tributes were made by her friends and family.

Caroline Rocky, from Ireland, who is Mary's second cousin, shared her sympathy to the rest of their family: "I just wanted to say sorry to my Uncle Donie, Eileen, cousin Dan and his wife Pamela and her brothers and all the family for the loss of such a beautiful young girl.

"God only takes the best."

Daisy Appleton, who also knew Mary, said: "Mary was a very young stunning girl. She was very well known around the community and she was very well liked.

"She will be sadly missed by her poor boyfriend Jerry and her family.

"I will miss you Mary and will keep you in my prayers."
