Giovanni van Bronckhorst shares Rangers subs thinking after making just one change in last two matches

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has explained why he didn't make any subs during Rangers ' win over St Johnstone.

That's now just one sub in 180 minutes of football after one change was made during the 2-2 draw with Motherwell on Sunday.

Kemar Roofe, Fashion Sakala, and Scott Wright didn't get on the pitch but van Bronckhorst says he didn't think changes were necessary with his team in control of the game.

That meant another full 90 minutes Scott Arfield and Joe Aribo on a pitch that Glenn Kamara described as heavy.

But three points rather than fresh legs was van Bronckhorst's primary focus.

He told Sky Sports: "Sometimes you change to turn things around or to change something but I didn’t feel like we needed a change.

"I was so focused on the game to get the win after 90 minutes so I didn’t think about any changes."

Rangers again had some big chances missed with Alfredo Morelos hitting the post, Aribo having a great shot saved and Arfield missing two glorious opportunities.

And van Bronckhorst admits it was frustrating they didn't get more goals but was happy to take the three points back to Glasgow on a difficult night.

He added: "Three points in the bag and go home.

"Sometimes football is like that. It was a very tough game and I said before the game there would be a lot of long balls. The pitch wasn't the standard we want to play our game.

"We needed to play a little different. The early goal lifted us and they were opening up after that and in the first half we had a lot of chances.

"Morelos hit the post, Scotty had a shot from close range over the bar and in the second half we didn’t give a chance away.

"We had to fight to win this game and we did.

"It was because they started with five defenders and then they changed the system which made it easier for us. It’s always good to start. We had many chances again but defensively we were solid. We won our duels and sometimes a game needs that.

"If you score a goal and you are ruthless in defending you’ll win the game. But again we could have won with a greater manager. I’m really happy with the points because we needed them."
