GIOVANNI VAN BRONCKHORST savoured an ‘amazing’ European night at Ibrox as Rangers moved to the brink of a place in the Champions League this term.
Goals from James Tavernier, Antonio Colak and Malik Tillman clinched an incredible comeback victory as Union Saint-Gilloise were beaten on a dramatic and high-stakes occasion.
Rangers had to overcome a two-goal deficit after a lacklustre defeat in Belgium last week as they left themselves with it all to do heading into the return leg on home soil.
But Van Bronckhorst’s side would rise to the challenge once again on the continent as a capacity Ibrox crowd road them to a deserved win that puts them a step closer to a place in the group stages.
The Dutchman will face former international team-mate Ruud van Nistelrooy after PSV emerged as extra-time winners over Monaco and the Eredivisie giants will make the trip to Ibrox next week.
Van Bronckhorst said: “It’s another amazing night in Europe. There was a lot of pressure on us to deliver and to go through to the next round.
“We played really well today at moments and kept the pressure on them.
“We know the atmosphere can be very hostile and we created that atmosphere along with the fans. I’m very proud of the performance of my team.
“We know the fans are always there but if we have a performance like we did today then the crowd will be even more hostile.
“They keep pushing us to go forward so at moments in the game you have to make the right decision not to go too quick with your attacks.
“But we knew we were capable of doing this but we keep doing it time after time. And today we did it again.
“They had some chances – the biggest one Jon saved in the second half. Some chances we just dropped our bodies in front of them to block the shorts.
“It’s a big performance. We needed that. I’m very proud of the team.
“We’re still in contention to go to the group stages of the Champions League.
“We’ll be there to do everything possible to be in the Champions League this season.”
