GIOVANNI VAN BRONCKHORST admits the right call was made in the end after a power cut brought a halt to their friendly with Sunderland.
The match at the Albufeira Municipal Stadium was postponed after a 45 minute delay that saw both teams remain on the pitch whilst the referee held talks with staff and officials.
Rangers will have one final training session in Portugal on Monday before returning to Glasgow and turning their attentions to their trip to Blackpool next week.
The early call off presented a headache for Van Bronckhorst as his preparations were disrupted but the Dutchman had no qualms about the decision.
Van Bronckhorst said: "Of course it was not ideal.
"You want to play a game, you want to give minutes to all your players to help them get stronger.
"Once the lights broke you wait and you wait and you keep on waiting.
"You get the news that they don't have much hope the lights will be back on.
"All the power seemed to be down. It was too much risk for my players to play because of the break.
"It is only the first week of pre-season.
"You can't have an hour break and then play on. It is not ideal.
"We had to make the decision to not play. We had to listen to all the aspects with the police too.
"You wait 15 minutes, then it becomes 30 and then 40.
"You want to get your players stronger but you also want to keep them fresh and ensure they don't get injured.
"After such a long delay the correct decision was made."
