Giovanni Di Lorenzo warns of Napoli 'risks' in honest Liverpool assessment

Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo says his team's goal is to progress from the Champions League group ahead of Wednesday night's clash with Liverpool.

The Reds get their European campaign underway this week with a trip to face Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. The Serie A giants are a team Liverpool are familiar with, having played them in group stages of the competition in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons.

However, Napoli have failed to qualify for the competition two years running and return this season after they finished third in their league last term. Di Lorenzo insists they will do all they can to progress to the knockout stages and emerge from the group that also consists of Ajax and Rangers.

“In games like this you have to take risks, when we have the ball we will have to show our qualities. You need balance but also personality," he said in his pre-match press conference. “Liverpool are not in trouble. The Champions League is not the Premier, they will want to start well.

"But we too want to play a great game at home. The lack of experience can also be an extra boost, given the desire to play the Champions League. We had not been in the Champions League for two years, the goal is to pass the group."

Liverpool last won the competition in 2019 and made the final last season. Their trip to Paris in May ended in heartbreak as they were edged 1-0 by Real Madrid and missed out on their seventh European Cup.

Despite the disappointing start to their league campaign, Jurgen Klopp will hope his side can find some form as they begin their Champions League run. They have struggled to beat the Italian side in their recent meetings, however, winning just one of four matches against them under Klopp.
