Giorgos Giakoumakis sets Celtic goal target as he declares title charge has proven him right

Vindicated Giorgos Giakoumakis insists he isn't surprised to be proven right over his confident title vow earlier in the season.

But the Greek hitman admits there is a tinge of disappointment from a personal perspective - as he was "nowhere near" his personal target for goals.

Giakoumakis raised eyebrows earlier in the season when he declared Celtic would win the Premiership title, because he felt they were better than Rangers "in every area."

Their form since then leaves little room for argument with Ange Postecoglou 's team surging six points ahead of their rivals and clinching the title with room to spare.

Giakoumakis says he believed in his teammates since day one and that's why he felt confident enough to call it so early in the season.

He said: "We had great games. At the point that I made that statement, I believed so much in my team.

"From the first day I set foot in here until now, I believed we were playing very good football and we had good players.

"Nothing happens by luck in football. So I think we deserved it and I'm really happy about that."

Central to Celtic's charge towards the title was Giakoumakis' goalscoring form.

Despite an injury-hit start to the season, he returned to fitness just as Kyogo was sidelined in December, and has since fired 14 goals in all competitions to take his Celtic total to 15 in 28 games.

Despite that though he remains disappointed as after finishing last season as the Eredivisie's top scorer, he felt he could have scored far more.

When asked if he has hit his personal targets for the season he said: "My main target was to stay healthy until the end. Well...I wasn't fit all season.

"But one of my main targets, the first one, was to win the league. It was something I really wanted to achieve with this club. I've already won it.

"I wasn't even close to what I was aiming to do (in terms of goals). It's not a number, I knew that if I was healthy from the start until the end, I would score many more goals with the club.

"It's something that made me upset when I was injured because I love scoring goals and celebrating with my teammates.

"I hope next year I will be healthy from day one and keep scoring goals every single game."
