Giorgos Giakoumakis Celtic transfer value rated at DOUBLE Urawa Red Diamonds offer amid release clause theory

Bemused Barry Ferguson reckons Celtic should have demanded at least double Urawa Red Diamonds offer for striker Giorgos Giakoumakis.

The Scottish Premiership champions have reportedly agreed a fee with the J-League side for striker Giakoumakis, with the total package said to be around just £3.5 million. The 28-year-old has yet to make a final decision over his future but looks destined to leave Celtic Park before the end of the window with contract talks stalling between the player's representatives and the clubs earlier in the campaign.

Giakoumakis arrived in Glasgow's east end for £2.5m from VVV Venlo just 18 months ago and finished last season as the joint top goalscorer in the league, and Rangers hero Ferguson admits he is surprised by the lowball offer accepted by Celtic this month. The former Ibrox skipper told The Go Radio Football Show that there could be a release clause written into his deal for clubs outside of Europe.

He stated: "There has to be a clause in the contract for that price. In my opinion, he is worth at least double that. I would imagine this is what happens after you sign contracts, after the first season in the second season you put clauses in. I think he will be a massive miss if he does leave, which it looks like he is going to do.

"Since he has come into the club he is a hero. The Celtic fans love him. He has played well, he has scored goals and I think it will be a massive miss for Celtic.

"Postecoglou will have something up his sleeve. He won't let him go unless he has someone to replace him."
