Giorgos Giakoumakis breaks Atlanta record as former Celtic man believes he 'can score in every MLS game'

Former Celtic man Giorgos Giakoumakis has been hailed as 'different' by new club Atlanta United after becoming the quickest player to score 10 goals in the Five Stripes' history.

The Greek star joined the Georgia-based side in January amid contract talks stalling with Celtic, which ultimately ended in Oh moving to Celtic Park as his replacement. It left a sorrowful taste in the mouths of the Hoops faithful, though the Korean's arrival has helped soften the blow.

In the meantime, Giakoumakis has been on fire. Helping the side from the Eastern Conference to 28 points in just 18 games, they sit fifth in the standings; miles clear of the play-offs and well in the hunt to win the MLS Play-offs. And that has been largely down to the forward - who has become the quickest player in Atlanta history to reach 10 goals for the club in their 3-1 win over Wayne Rooney's FC United.

It took just 13 minutes for Giakoumakis to get on the scoresheet, though it came in bizarre fashion. A long ball by Miles Robinson saw DC goalkeeper Tyler Miller misread his pass, and Giakoumakis rounded him to slot home from a seemingly impossible angle to put himself into the Atlanta record books.

Taxiarchis Fountas soon levelled, before a double Celtic delight - forgotten left-back Andrew Gutman, who left Celtic two years ago under Neil Lennon, restored the lead with a well-drilled effort that beat Miller all ends up.

Giakoumakis further stated that he believed he could 'score in every game', saing: “Every year. I mean, c’mon, let’s be honest. I’m a striker. It has to be in my mind, It has to be in my mind first of all in order to give me extra motivation.

"Every single game I have to stay focused, I have to find my own motivation. That’s my first one. Whenever I feel I have to score in every single game, it means I also have to help the team more. Whenever I score, my team has an advantage. That’s why it’s in my mind always.”
