Giovanni van Bronckhorst won't be Rangers manager after the World Cup. That’s the view of the Sportscene panel, who think the 1-1 draw with St Mirren has done for the Dutchman.
Despite beating Hearts in midweek, the Light Blues were lacklustre and didn’t build on that win in Paisley at Saturday lunchtime. They fell behind yet again two minutes into the second half and needed a late James Tavernier penalty to rescue a point against the Buddies, who are now unbeaten against the Glasgow clubs at home.
Celtic showed them no mercy either, coming from behind to beat Ross County 2-1 at Parkhead. The Hoops' victory leaves van Bronckhorst nine points adrift of Ange Postecoglou’ s men at the top of the Premiership table. There are still three Old Firm games to play, but few would have any real faith in the Govan club reeling in their city rivals now.
Whether the board pull the trigger or not remains to be seen. But Michael Stewart and Richard Foster reckon there could be a new face in the dugout by the time the Premiership action resumes.
“The question has been posed and understandably so,” said Michael Stewart. “The manager’s acknowledged that performances and results have not been good enough. And when you hear his answers, it certainly doesn’t fill the board with confidence when they might be pondering one way or the other.
“If he’s like ‘football, well, don’t know, need to wait and see.’ He needs to be more convincing. The most important thing is getting results as that bulbs confidence and belief right through the club and they’ve been struggling.
“But forget the injuries, there should still be more than enough in the squad to be able to get results. More importantly, to be competing and looking like they’ve got an idea of what they’re trying to do.
“It’s too flat and that to me, speaks to a bigger problem. Will he be around after the world Cup? I don’t think so.
Former Ibrox defender Richard Foster added: “It’s gonna be tough and he’s not sure himself, is he? I was all for giving him a but of time but everytime they come out on the pitch it’s the same old, same old. It might be time with the break now to bring someone new in.
“I don’t know if the board have been looking for someone. But he’ll struggle to come back after the World Cup.”
