Gio van Bronckhorst's Rangers defensive woes laid bare as expected goal figures highlight struggling backline

Rangers have emerged as one of the Scottish Premiership's most underperforming sides defensively relative to their non-penalty goals against.

BetVictor conducted research into all 12 top-flight club's expected goals for (xG) and against (xGA) so far this season and they state comparing these values to actual goals scored and conceded can indicate whether a team is above or below average at taking and preventing goal-scoring opportunities, or perhaps experiencing particularly good or bad luck around the goal.

And the results has emphasised the Light Blues woes at the back. There is a -32.56% disparity between what they are anticipated to concede and what they have. Only Kilmarnock boast a greater gap among the clubs with -38.89%. But the data does make better reading for the Ibrox outfit in the forward areas as they sit second behind St Johnstone, enjoying a 36.43% difference - scoring 22 goals (not including penalties or own goals) from an xG of 15.22.

It's a different story for Celtic, though. Ange Postecoglou's men are overperforming in both attack and defence relative to their xG and xGA. They are scoring 20.91% more non-penalty goals than expected while conceding 2.96% less than anticipated. St Mirren top the chart defensively with a 15.67% contrast.

Rangers are on the back of a 7-1 Champions League thrashing from Liverpool and go into this weekend's clash with Motherwell without centre-back Connor Goldson while they face a sweat over the fitness of Ben Davies with Filip Helander and John Souttar still long term absentees.

The Steelmen are the most underperforming team in attack relative to their xG scoring 8 goals from a 12.49 non-penalty xG – the 4 th highest xG value in the league but the worst percentage difference.
