Gio van Bronckhorst promises Rangers 'positive approach' against Liverpool as he faces huge striker choice

Gio van Bronckhorst vowed Rangers will be more positive in the second part of their Battle of Britain against Liverpool as they warmed for the the Ibrox clash against the English giants with a 4-0 rout of St Mirren.

The Dutchman was criticised for his side being too passive in the 2-0 defeat at Anfield and he said the Light Blues will change for the return on Wednesday. Antonio Colak netted his third league double on the trot with James Tavernier netting from the spot and Fashion Sakala also on target against the Buddies to stay within two points of leaders Celtic.

It was a confidence booster ahead of the clash with Jurgen Klopp’s men with Gers pointless in Group A and Van Bronckhorst said: “It’s a big test against a good team but of course we need to have a different approach because if we want to continue our run in Europe then we have to get points out of our remaining games so that means you need to have a positive approach.

“We are strong at home on a European night as we showed against Napoli when it took three penalties and a red card before we conceded. We will prepare really welly to face a really good and strong opponent but we need something out of the game.

“We have to be brave and we were in second half moments because we were defending one on one almost all over the pitch because we were pressing high. In the moments we won the ball we could have been more dangerous because it was only in the last 10, 15 minutes of the game. We have to try to be dangerous and create chances earlier.”

Van Bronckhorst was happy with the win against the Paisley side but wouldn’t say if Colak will start against the Reds after he was benched at the expense of Alfredo Morelos at Anfield. He said: “Antonio has started well and the first goal shows his ability to be proactive instead of reactive.

"He’s on fire in the league with the goals he’s scoring at the moment and that’s what you want from your striker. Fashion had a really good game. He scored a really good goal but also the threat he had on the right.

“We still have three days to prepare. Of course, I always look at what the game needs and what we need from the game and I will think about it in the coming days and come up with a line-up to get a positive result.

“The most pleasing was the three points but also the intention we showed from the first minute until the last was very positive in the way we were playing going forward, trying to be dangerous in every attack we made so that was very important against a team who started really well in the league and can defend really well.”
