Gio van Bronckhorst offers Rangers stadium decision theory as boss calls UEFA into question

Gio van Bronckhorst has backed the Rangers support to turn the 42,000-seater Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium into a cauldron.

But the puzzled Ibrox admits he can't get his head around why UEFA have chosen such a small arena for Wednesday's Europa League final in Seville.

The exodus of Rangers fans to southern Spain is well underway, with over 100,000 jubilant punters expected to descend on Andalusia in the hope of seeing their heroes make the most of their date with destiny.

But with tickets in such short supply, city bosses in Seville have been forced to open up the 60,000-capacity La Cartuja Stadium - venue for Celtic 's 2003 UEFA Cup final defeat and normally used to used stage the Spanish national team's home games - as a fan zone.

Tickets to see the game live at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan are already trading for more than £2,000 a pop on the black market and Van Bronckhorst can't understand why European football's governing body have not selected a bigger ground for one of their biggest showpiece events.

Van Bronckhorst said: "I don’t know what the thinking is. Of course, I would love to have a bigger stadium because then more fans could watch the game.

"I don’t know, maybe it’s like they want to have a difference in all the competitions. Y’know, the Champions League has a big stadium in Paris now, the Europa League and Conference League has a smaller stadium.

"I think they want to keep the difference in level – that’s a question for UEFA. I really expect a great atmosphere with all the fans we’ve got.

"I played there before with Barcelona and also with Feyenoord in the Europa League. I think it’s going to be a very good atmosphere in this stadium."
