Gio van Bronckhorst and the Rangers situation that would put him 'under pressure' amid criticism

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst will only come under serious scrutiny if he fails to win a trophy this season, according to a former Hoops midfielder.

The Dutchman has come under fire this season as the recruitment work done over the summer is put under the spotlight amid a difficult Champions League campaign that's brought four defeats from four matches, including a 7-1 Ibrox hammering by Liverpool. Some domestic performances have been impressive but others like a 4-0 humbling from Celtic leave Rangers narrowly trailing in the title race.

Former Hoops midfielder and Open Goal's Si Ferry reckons that Van Bronckhorst's position shouldn't be questioned, but those posers will be put forward if they don't touch silverware this term.

He told Grosvenor Sport: "There shouldn’t be any pressure on Van Bronckhorst. Nobody expected Rangers to get to the group stages of the Champions League and he did a tremendous job last year.

"That should allow him to have the full season at Rangers with season. If Rangers don’t win anything this year then I’ve no doubt he’ll be under pressure.

"But at this moment in time, yes he needs to sort his best team out, but he’s not under any pressure. I also think that Giovanni van Bronckhorst still doesn’t know his best style or team.

"Celtic play the exact same way all the time and have the right players in to fit that style of play. I still think Celtic will win the league purely because they have a better squad than Rangers."
