Gio van Bronckhorst admits Rangers dodged 'close' red card call as he addresses James Sands flashpoint

Gio van Bronckhorst admits James Sands was fortunate to avoid a red card in their commanding win over Ross County. But over the piece he was delighted with Rangers ' performance that sent them back to the Premiership summit for at least 24 hours.

Malky Mackay was left raging on the touchline when Sands, already on a booking, hauled down County' s Jordy Hiwula on the counter-attack. He was the last man but referee Don Robertson saw nothing wrong with it and waved for the striker to get back to his feet.

The scores were level at the time with John Lundstram 's deflected opener coming moments later. They went on to rack them up, with an Antonio Colak double and Steven Davis strike sealing a comfortable win. Van Bronckhorst said on Sportsound: "You have to attack well, we did that especially in the first half. But we gave some space away at the back too and gave some passes away. That's why James Sands was on a booking.

"In the second half we changed our setup to give us more control when we lose the ball. But throughout the game our performance was good, we created lots of chances and I think the four goals we scored were great."

And on the Sands incident, he admits it could have gone either way - expressing relief that his side got the break. He went on: "We already had James on a booking and I think it was a close call that went our way. Sometimes the call from the referee is against you, sometimes it's to your advantage, but it's the decision of the ref at the moment. For us, it was a positive call because it meant James didn't get his second yellow."
