Gino D’Acampo has claimed he once turned down an invitation to have tea with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace because he didn’t like what was on the menu.
While many would have jumped at the opportunity for an audience with Her Majesty, the Italian chef, 46, said that the circumstances just weren’t for him, describing a cucumber sandwich as his “worst nightmare”.
Recalling the prestigious invite, he said: “I was invited to the Palace for tea just before Covid, but a cucumber sandwich is my worst nightmare.
“I don’t like tea either, so I phoned my agent and said: ‘I’d love to meet her, but I don’t like tea and cucumber sandwiches, and I can’t do either of those things,’” he added to the Mail Online.
Another contributing factor to him declining the offer was the dress code.
He explained: "I’m also going to have to wear a tie, and the last time I did that was when I got married. I can’t do that. But if I can have a plate of pasta and a cup of coffee, I’m in.”
The former winner of I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! has lived in the UK since he was 18, but there are some customs he simply can’t get on board with.
While he may not be a fan of the traditional afternoon tea menu, he recently launched his own version at his eponymous restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne which includes truffle cream cheese.
