Gini Wijnaldum transfer update prompts Newcastle fan debate

The potential availability of Gini Wijnaldum in the January transfer window has prompted a debate among Newcastle United fans.

The Dutch international spent a solitary season at St James' Park, but was one of the few positives to emerge from the doomed 2015/16 campaign.

Wijnaldum netted 11 times in his first season in English football, and sealed a £25m move to Liverpool as Rafa Benitez was left to plot the Magpies rebuild in the Championship.

The 31-year-old enjoyed a memorable five-year spell on Merseyside, making 237 appearances and helping Jurgen Klopp's side to lift the Premier League and Champions League.

However, the midfielder decided against signing a contract extension at Anfield this summer, instead opting for a three-year deal at Paris Saint-Germain.

Wijnaldum was swayed by the 'ambitious project' in the French capital, but is now reportedly keen to push for a Premier League return after just six months.

The former United star has found opportunities under Mauricio Pochettino hard to come by, with strong competition for a midfield berth against Idrissa Gueye, Ander Herrera, Leandro Paredes, Danilo Pereira, and Marco Verratti.

Sky Sports claim Wijnaldum wants a mid-season loan switch to be approved, but PSG are at this stage 'unlikely' to sanction an exit.

Given the weight of transfer speculation following the Newcastle takeover, a possible return to Tyneside has inevitably been suggested on social media.

But despite Wijnaldum's achievements since his Magpies exit, the prospect of a second spell has seemed to divide United fans.

Here is how Magpies supporters reacted to the latest Wijnaldum transfer development:
