As the New England Patriots get set to play the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, there are a couple of names on the Packers’ sideline that I would want to see in a New England uniform. Of course, the obvious name would be Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. However, I’m not going to use him for this week.
Wide receiver Romeo Doubs would be my pick.
The wide receiver has caught 14 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown on the season. The rookie was actually interviewed by the Patriots during the pre-draft process. He has made his mark in the NFL to this point and is coming off an eight-catch, 73-yard performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has caught at least two receptions in the first three games of the season and has shown big-play ability. He has averaged at least 90 yards per reception.
Of course, the jury is still out on Tyquan Thornton. He is going to miss some time due to injury. There is a very good chance he could be the answer to New England’s wide receiving woes in the future. Right now, however, they desperately need another weapon. Doubs would certainly be that wide receiver.
It may seem odd to pick a rookie wide receiver, but Doubs’ upside is incredibly high. The Patriots admittedly have struggled with the developmental process when drafting receivers. Nevertheless, Doubs’ raw athletic ability is high enough to where he could overshadow stunted development.
He is emerging as a big-play weapon for the Packers, and that’s something the Patriots desperately need. Green Bay has taken on the interesting task of drafting rookie wide receivers.
It looks like their work is paying off to this point. It will be interesting to see how the rest of his season plays out. Hopefully, the Patriots can keep him at bay on Sunday.
