Gilmore v Wright surfing showdown on hold in Hawaii

Australia's five quarter-finalists will have to wait at least another day for competition to resume in the World Surf League championship tour event at Sunset Beach in Hawaii.

Small surf prompted organisers to call a lay day in the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach Beach on Saturday (Sunday AEDT) with both the men's and women's competitions down to the last eight.

When the contest does resume all eyes will be on the marquee all-Australian clash between eight-time and reigning world champion Stephanie Gilmore and two-time world champion Tyler Wright.

Countrywoman Molly Picklum faces a quarter-final rematch with Costa Rica's Brisa Hennessy, who beat her at the same stage last year on her way to winning the event title.

In the men's contest, Australia's world No.1 Jack Robinson has his sights on a second straight title in 2023 when he meets American Nat Young in his quarter-final while countryman Ethan Ewing takes on Griffin Colapinto (US).
