Gilbert Gottfried ‘would have loved’ his ‘star-studded’ funeral, shiva, comic Jeff Ross says

NEW YORK — Gilbert Gottfried has been laid to rest.

The comedian was remembered by his fellow funny friends and loved ones at a funeral in Westchester Thursday, two days after the “Aladdin” star died at age 67.

“The shiva tonight will be a star-studded event and the funeral was just absolutely perfect,” stand-up comic Jeff Ross, who gave the eulogy, told People Thursday. “Gilbert would have loved it. I saw so many great comics there paying their respects.”

Among those comics were Colin Quinn, Susie Essman, Mario Cantone, Dave Attell and Paul Shaffer, according to the magazine. Sarah Silverman plans to sit shiva with Gottfried’s loved ones. Whoopi Goldberg did not make it to the funeral, but sent a gift.

Bob Saget’s widow, Kelly Rizzo, and three daughters, were also at the memorial, which Ross told People was “very heartwarming.” Saget died suddenly in January at age 65.

On Wednesday, Gottfried was also remembered by Howard Stern as “one of the most naturally funny, most gifted human beings on the planet.”

“I tried so many times to put him in different things because I was convinced Gilbert could be the greatest superstar on the planet if he would just take a little direction,” the SiriusXM host said. “But Gilbert was not up for it.”

The memorial “was cathartic but there was also a sense of relief,” Ross told People.

“As I said at the funeral, Gilbert had been sick, he was tired, and he had perfect timing,” Ross continued. “He knew it was his time to get off the stage.”

Gottfried died of recurrent ventricular tachycardia due to myotonic dystrophy type 2, which he had been battling for years. He is survived by wife Dara and kids Lily, 14, and Max, 12.
