Gilbert Gottfried dead: Voice of Aladdin's Iago the parrot dies after long illness

Actor and comedian Gilbert Gottfried has died at the age of 67. His family made the announcement on Twitter and said they were "heartbroken" at their loss.

The star - known for his distinctive "signature scream-speak", according to CNN, voiced the character of Iago the parrot in Disney's Aladdin. He began his comedy career as a teenager, first performing stand-up aged just 15.

He reprised the role of Iago in subsequent Aladdin features; including Aladdin: The Return of Jafar, Aladdin and the King of Thieves, the television series and video games, the Mirror reports.

His family wrote in a post on Twitter: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness. In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children.

"Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert's honor."

Gilbert was born in New York on February 28 1955. He had a 12-episode stint on America's biggest televised comedy show, Saturday Night Live, during its sixth season in 1980, and later reunited with fellow SNL alumni Eddie Murphy on Beverly Hills Cop II - an early major film role.

His TV and film credits also included Dr Dolittle, Family Guy, Mad About You, Anger Management and multiple televised comedy roasts. He married Dara Kravitz in 2007 and the couple have two children, daughter Lily and son Max.
