Gifted 17-year-old and 6ft 8in giant son of famous Wales international picked out as top pro players in making

Highly rated teenager Morgan Morse is one of 10 youngsters who have been identified as potential professionals of the future at the Ospreys.

And the 6ft 8in Lewis Jones, son of former Wales second row Derwyn Jones, is among the group, as well.

The pair feature in a bumper group of players picked out as budding Ospreys of the future. They are in what the region style as a transition group. Without yet signing professional contracts, all will train alongside the main squad in an attempt to progress and make the leap into the senior game.

There are particularly high hopes for Morse. Still only 17, he has already been marked out as a player with the raw ability to go far. The back rower from Cwmtwrch RFC carries strongly, hits hard in defence and is said to possess a winning mindset.

Ospreys pathway manager Gareth Walters first came across him when viewing a Dewar Shield match when the then fresh-faced forward appeared off the bench, a year younger than others in the team.

Walters has since told WalesOnline: “Watching the things that he was doing, I had to turn around and ask some students sitting behind me: ‘Who the heck is that kid?’

“They said: ‘That’s Morgan Morse. He’s actually a year younger.’

“You only had to watch him for a few minutes to realise he had a lot to offer.”

Morse has played for Wales U20s and is part of Byron Hayward’s squad for the upcoming U20 Summer Series to be played in Italy.

Ex-Cowbridge Comprehensive School pupil and Swansea University student Jones, too, is showing potential as a talented lineout forward who is not only secure on his own ball but also a threat on the opposition’s possession.

The young giant is also developing his game around the field.

There are three other forwards on the list, including front rowers Ellis Fackrell and Lewis Lloyd. The pair have figured for Treorchy Zebras, with Fackrell also in the Wales U20s group for the Summer Series. Back rower Cai Davies makes up the forward quintet.

Behind, Cwmavon’s Dan Edwards has already featured for Aberavon in the Welsh Premiership, with the fly-half rated as highly promising by the Wizards.

Harri Houston has figured for Swansea and been marked out as a sharp wing, with full-back Iestyn Hopkins also gaining experience with the All Whites, in his case after cutting his rugby teeth with Ystradgynlais.

Bridgend Ravens scrum-half Harvey Nash and Bridgend Athletic’s centre Tom Florence, who has also played for the Ravens and Swansea, complete the 10.
