In the bottom of the seventh inning on Wednesday night, New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge made history. He sent a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for home run No. 61, tying fellow Yankees legend Roger Maris for the most in AL history.
While stepping up to the podium on Thursday, New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale took it upon himself to make note of the “awesome” milestone.
“Hey, (it was) awesome last night,” Martindale told reporters unprovoked. “Aaron Judge… Awesome. I think the older you get, the more you really appreciate history. That was great.”
The home run wasn’t the only thing Martindale appreciated. The 59-year-old father of two also appreciated what Judge did after the game: giving the home run ball to his mother.
“The coolest thing about it was watching he and his Mom,” Martindale continued. “I’m sure everybody saw that he gave his Mom the ball. That was really cool, so congratulations to him.”
Roger Maris Jr., the son of the famous Yankees slugger, was also on hand to pay his respects to Judge. After the game, he said it’s a matter of when — not if — Judge hits No. 62 to become what he believes is the true all-time home run king.
Whether or not Martindale agrees with that sentiment, you can bet he’ll be watching on as the Yankees and Judge host the Baltimore Orioles this Friday night.
