Giants wary as 'energised' Eagles hunt first win

GWS won't take a winless West Coast lightly as Eagles coach Andrew McQualter mulls a new-look defence.

Both sides will be looking to bounce back from defeat when the Giants welcome the Eagles to Engie Stadium on Sunday.

GWS (2-1) are licking their wounds after a 12-point loss to early premiership favourites Hawthorn in windy conditions.

Meanwhile, the 18th-placed Eagles have yet to break through for their first win of the season after a 38-point defeat in the western derby.

A victory over West Coast seems easy on paper for Adam Kingsley's men, with the visitors forced to go without key defender Jeremy McGovern (groin).

But the Giants won't be lulled into complacency.

Especially after watching the Eagles almost pull of a major upset over reigning premiers Brisbane in round two, when they led by 31 points before ultimately suffering a 19-point loss.

"They look really energised. They look like they're competing really hard," GWS star midfielder Tom Green told AAP.

"They haven't probably started the year as great as they would have liked to, but they're playing some really good football.

"We understand that it's going to be a big task.

"They pushed Brisbane really hard a couple of weeks ago, and even pushed Fremantle all the way.

"It's certainly not going to be an easy win or a pushover like that. We're going to have to play our best football if we want to get a win."

West Coast will be looking to move out of the shadow cast by co-captain Oscar Allen's meeting with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell.

Set to come off contract at season's end, a "remorseful" and "embarrassed" Allen admitted sitting down with Mitchell to discuss his playing future was a "distraction" amid preparations for Sunday's game.

Allen, struggling to fire in attack, could be set for a stint in the backline after McQualter dropped key defender Harry Edwards.

The Giants are set to flex more muscle in attack.

Jake Riccardi joins Jesse Hogan in the forward line after serving a two-match suspension, while Jake Stringer is hunting his first goal in orange after making his club debut against the Hawks.

McQualter has also opted to recall midfielder Clay Hall and unveil debutants Sandy Brock, Hamish Davis and Tom Gross, with Liam Ryan (illness) and Elijah Hewett (calf) out.

West Coast have played seven games at Engie Stadium, only winning three of them.

GWS got on top by 65 points in the club's previous meeting, at Optus Stadium in 2024, after West Coast pulled off a 19-point victory the year before.

"It's disappointing to lose to Hawthorn but it's early in the season, and the Hawks are a really good side," Green said.

"In the small moments against Hawthorn, I think we got to play some of our football. We saw what that looked like, and how dangerous our forward line is.

"Jake, it was great to have him down there. It was the first time I've run out alongside him, and that was fantastic.

"He looked really dangerous, and he's only going to continue to improve.

"And 'Hoges' was back (from a thumb injury) like he almost never left, finishing with four goals so they'll keep working on their chemistry."
