The series

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

This is the 15th regular-season meeting between the Giants and Raiders since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger. The Raiders hold the series edge, 8-6.

The Giants have won the past five contests going back to 2005.

This will be the first time the Giants will play the Raiders in Las Vegas, where the Raiders moved to from Oakland in 2020.

The Giants won the most recent matchup, 23-16, at MetLife Stadium on November 7, 2021. The last time the Giants faced the Raiders on the road was on December 3, 2017, a 24-17 loss in Oakland.

The Giants, at 2-6, are in last place in the NFC East, five full games behind the division-leading Philadelphia Eagles, and are ranked 13th in the NFC.

Although they have less than a two-percent chance of qualifying for the postseason, the Giants are just two full games out of the final wild-card spot.

The 3-5 Raiders are ranked 14th in the AFC, a game and a half out of the final playoff spot. They are third in the AFC West, three full games behind division-leading Kansas City.

Naturally, a victory for either team here would keep their dimming postseason hopes afloat.

No one is sure what the future holds for the Raiders after they fired general manager Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels on Tuesday night.

Former Giants defensive captain Antonio Pierce has been elevated from linebackers coach to interim head coach just in time to face his former team this Sunday.

The Raiders are led on offense by Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, running back Josh Jacobs, and wide receiver Davante Adams.

On defense, Las Vegas is led by edge rusher Maxx Crosby, who leads the team with 6.5 sacks, and linebacker Robert Spillane, the Raiders’ top tackler this season.

State of the Giants

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants blew a 10-7 lead to the New York Jets last Sunday at MetLife Stadium, allowing the Jets to tie the game in the last 24 seconds and then win it in overtime, 13-10.

They have played the last three games without starting quarterback Daniel Jones (neck), who is returning to action this week.

The defense has allowed a league-low 11.3 points per game over their last three but only have one win to show for it. They no longer have defensive lineman and captain Leonard Williams, who was dealt to Seattle before the trade deadline for draft picks.

The Giants are 32nd in total offense. They are last in the league in scoring per game, passing offense, 27th on third down, and next to last in red zone efficiency. They are 15th in rushing yards per game.

On defense, the Giants are 20th in the NFL. They are 12th in passing defense 24th against the rush and 17th in the red zone.

The Raiders are 31st in total offense — 22nd in passing and dead last in rushing. They are 25th in the red zone and 30th on third down.

The Raiders are 19th in total defense — ninth against the pass and 30th versus the run. They are 28th on third down and 25th in the red zone.

The Giants are 15th in giveaways and 24th in takeaways. They are 24th in sacks and 10th in sacks allowed.

The Raiders are 30th in giveaways and 8th in takeaways. They are 23rd in both sacks and sacks allowed this season.
