Giants vs. Dolphins: Week 5 staff picks and predictions

The New York Giants (1-3) will take on the Miami Dolphins (3-1) this Sunday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium in their fifth game of the 2023 regular season.

Opening the week, the Giants were 10.5-point road underdogs and that spread has only gotten worse. As of this writing, New York is +12.5.

How does the Giants Wire staff see this Week 5 battle shaking out? Here’s a look at our picks and score predictions:

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants are a terrible football team from top to bottom. The Miami Dolphins are not. This doesn’t really need a whole lot of analysis, context or commentary. It’s going to be ugly.

John Fennelly: Dolphins 37, Giants 20

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

The offense will look better but they won’t be able to keep pace with the fleet Miami offense. The Giants will likely be playing from behind — again — which means Daniel Jones will have to sit in the pocket (if there is one) and throw deeper passes. With Andrew Thomas and John Michael Schmitz out for this game, he may be facing another double-digit sack game. The defense will be put to the ultimate test, both on the ground and through the air. This could be another hard watch for Giant fans.

The dark days have surprised us just four weeks into the season, Giants fans.

A lot to a little — most score predictions will likely have something similar to this for the Giants’ Week 5 matchup.

The Dolphins offense is one of, if not the best in the NFL and I expect the Giants’ defense to struggle mightily on Sunday. Miami put up 70 a few short weeks ago and that was against a Broncos team that is playing close to the level of football the Giants have shown through four weeks.

On offense, the Dolphins’ defensive ranks make it seem like the Giants’ offense should be able to get something going. However, that should have been the case last week and instead, the Giants surrendered 11 sacks and had problems moving the ball.

I wish I could go against the grain in this one but the Giants are completely overmatched against Miami.

There just doesn’t seem to be much hope that the Giants offense will be able to keep up with the Dolphins. Without Andrew Thomas and John Michael Schmitz, a poor offensive line gets even weaker. Even if Saquon Barkley makes his return this week, it’s difficult to see the Giants being competitive in this one.

Jeevan Kirkland: Dolphins 41, Giants 13

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The Dolphins offense looks skilled, fast, talented, and on the same page. All things that the Giants offense does not. Miami should be able to run away with this one after a disappointing loss in Buffalo. The Giants defense will try their best but with the offense unable to keep up do not expect this one to be close.

Picking who is going to win this game was not a hard decision. The hard decision came in deciding what score to predict. The Dolphins have explosive capabilities, they put up 70 points on Denver a few weeks ago. But last week they allowed Buffalo to score 48 points in their first loss. The Giants have already allowed 40 points in a single game, while the most points they have scored is 31. All of this to say, the Dolphins rebound from their loss and come away with a win. The score? Ridiculously lopsided.
